Planning
The Tower of London is one of the busiest attractions in the country, so when you go matters almost as much as what you book. Here's how to time a visit for the smallest crowds.
Timing is the single biggest lever you have over how much you enjoy the Tower. Get it right and you'll walk into the Crown Jewels with room to breathe; get it wrong and you'll queue in the sun. If you're comparing Tower of London tours, factor in when you'll go, not just what you'll do.
Arrive at opening. The first 30 to 60 minutes are the quietest of the entire day, and it's the one window when you can reach the Jewel House before a queue forms. The Crown Jewels line builds from mid-morning and is longest between about 11:00 and 14:00 in summer. If a morning start isn't possible, the late afternoon after 15:00 is the next-best bet, as the coach groups thin out.
Weekdays are quieter than weekends, and midweek — Tuesday to Thursday — is quietest of all. Avoid UK school holidays and bank-holiday weekends if you can, when families pack the site. Remember the Tower opens an hour later on Mondays, at 10:00 rather than 09:00.
Summer brings the biggest crowds but also the richest programming, with Tudor performances and family activities across the grounds. Spring and autumn are a good compromise of decent weather and thinner queues. Winter is quietest by far. Whatever the season, the early-morning rule still applies.
Sometimes your dates are fixed and they fall in peak season. In that case, an early-access tour is worth the extra cost — it takes you in before the public and puts you at the Crown Jewels ahead of the crowd.
